Milan winter fashion week, part of the ‘Big Four’ held in New York, London and Paris, exudes a sense of class like no other European jetsetter event. Already a bustling metropolis and cultural hub home to the grand Piazza del Duomo, Milan is transformed during fashion week into a touristic web of flamboyant catwalks. With more than 40 shows taking place in venues such as Palazzo Reale and Palazzo Serbelloni from the 18th -24th of February, MFW will be the perfect destination for those seeking style and luxury in one of Europe’s most iconic cities.

Milan fashion week 2019 was notable for its new faces amongst classic labels such as Gucci and Prada, which have graced the catwalks for the past century. Marco Zanini made his debut last year, embracing an anti-global powerhouse attitude by completely self-funding his collection. His individualism was reflected in the clothes displayed, showing an incredible attention to detail while maintaining an overall minimalist look. On the other end of the scale was Gucci’s collection, which embraced an authentic ‘40s style with raw edges and basting stiches, perhaps a rebellion against the impersonal nature of mass clothing production. Also embracing a sense of rebellion was the Marni collection, which flaunted elaborate statement footwear and primary colours to music from The Shining, reflecting the tumultuous political landscape at the time.

This year, Milan fashion week precedes Paris Fashion Week, with the latter starting just a day after. Tickets to the exclusive event are hard to obtain, with those wishing to attend shows having had to register as buyers or press from the National Chamber of Italian Fashion. Alternatively, influencers working alongside particular brands may gain access to venues. Nonetheless, MFW will be exciting for anyone visiting the city, as names such as Versace, Moschino and Gucci attract thousands, creating an atmosphere of excitement, while everyone will don their best clothing to try and get a feel of the elegance and style displayed across the city.

In Milan, one is never short of options for fine dining, with a range of authentic Italian and Michelin star restaurants scattered across the city. One such restaurant is Felix Lo Basso, offering a panoramic view of the Duomo di Milano, and serving up Michelin star food from the likes of chef Felice Lo Basso. For an authentic Italian feel, Seta is another popular choice for those searching for fine cuisine. Serving Italian, Mediterranean and fresh seafood dishes, Seta boasts two Michelin stars, and adheres to smart dress code in line with the elegance of Milan Fashion Week. Its visible kitchen allows guests to watch the chefs at work, transforming dining into an entertaining, almost theatrical experience.

When attending Milan Fashion Week, jetsetters are spoilt for choice by the range of luxury and boutique hotels available to them. Park Hyatt is situated in the heart of the city, and each of its elegant rooms is fitted with cream coloured travertine and hand-blown Murano lamps, creating a calm and sophisticated environment for winding down after a day of research and entertainment. Also situated in the heart of MFW is the Hotel Manzoni, perfect for fashion lovers’ due to its location in the Quadrilatero d’Oro, where Milan’s most exclusive boutiques can be found. For a less pricey option, guests may choose to stay at the NH Milano Palazzo Moscova, situated behind a Neoclassical façade which was once home to Milan’s first railway station, providing a taste of the city’s history and culture.
