There’s no doubt that Valletta, Malta has a rich historical past. It’s known as the “modern” city established by the Knights of St. John, as a Baroque masterpiece, a European Art City, and a World Heritage City. Not only is it known for its rich past – but it’s also a fantastic destination for people who enjoy rich accommodation options, gorgeous beaches, and boutique stores.

According to A Holistic, Long-term Cruise Malta’ strategy by Times of Malta, the country has been launching incentives to help transform Valletta into a homeport to increase the proportion of luxury lines. Shopping, entertainment, dining, and boutique hotels have also opened to attract more upmarket clientele. So. if you’re dreaming of a luxe holiday in Valletta, Malta, here are four hotels to check out:

1. The Phoenicia Malta Hotel

In an article on ‘Why the Queen Was So Beguiled By Malta’ on iNews, it was highlighted that this was the only place the Queen lived outside of the UK, and that Valletta was a place she loved visiting. Among the many accommodation options in the city, the Phoenicia is the British Royal family’s favourite. It’s a 5-star hotel conveniently located on the border of Valletta and Floriana, offering the best of both worlds.

The hotel exterior is a stunning display of Art Deco and Maltese limestone architecture. Its interiors and rooms are furnished with British dark wood and leather and decorated with vases filled with flowers and kumquat trees. The facilities are also nothing short of extravagant with indoor and outdoor gardens, pools, a spa, and a gorgeous circular Palm Court lounge and bar.

2. Iniala Harbour House

With four charming townhouses, the Iniala Harbour House blends an exterior that dates back to the 1600s with a carefully custom-made modern interior. The hotel has 23 bedrooms and suits that differ in style. Its famed ‘infinity balconies’, luxurious leather-coated hangers, and bathrooms generously stocked with Diptyque products scream nothing but luxury.

Additionally, the Iniala is very close to the city’s main attractions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Saint John’s Cathedral, and the Barrakka Gardens. A feature on the  “Best Cultural Locations in Malta” by Love Holidays’ mentions that the Barrakka Gardens is a must-visit for its panoramic view of the Grand Harbour. Of course, the Iniala boasts a Michelin-star awarded restaurant atop its scenic rooftop – as if it wasn’t already an amazing hotel.

3. Rosselli

The Rosselli offers a contemporary twist compared to the hotels in Valletta. Upon entering, guests are greeted with a generous glass of prosecco. Its 17th-century palazzo was given a makeover – its roofing was made translucent, its walls painted a crisp white, and sunbeds were placed around the bar and pool area. Arches decorate the interiors of this 5-star boutique luxury accommodation.

Their flagship haute cuisine, which we also featured in “Under Grain: A Delightful Michelin Star Escapade in Malta”, secured a Michelin star within its first five months of being open. Rosselli is located in the heart of Valletta, just a five-minute walk from the Grand Master’s Place, and Fort St. Elmo. You can also ask for personalised butler service, private residence, or even rent a private yacht.

4. Grand Hotel Excelsior

Lastly, we have the Grand Hotel Excelsior – a hotel built right between the capital and the sea. It’s a large business-style hotel interestingly decorated with European and Asian-style furnishings. It also has the most extensive facilities among all the hotels in Valletta. Currently, a six-storey wing at the Grand Hotel Excelsior is being built, although it has garnered quite a bit of controversy.

The hotel has sea-facing rooms, individual balconies, and picturesque views of Valletta’s bastion walls, which are lit up at night. Excelsior also has large-scale buffets that feature dishes from around the world. The buffets are separate from their two main restaurants, and there is also a Tiki Bar that’s open in the summer. This is truly one of the most beautiful hotels you’ll ever lay your eyes on.

Malta is rich in travel memories for the sophisticated traveler.  These four hotel options make an stay in this intriguing destination all the more unforgettable.
