Many of us dream of experiencing the “royal treatment”. Exotic clothing imported from around the world, exclusive galas hosted by socialites, and cuisine crafted by Michelin star chefs. At the Glass Slippers Masquerade Ball during Venice’s spectacular Carnival, royalty is practically within grasp for all those in attendance. From a one-of-a-kind glass making show to an international DJ set, this exclusive event is sure to make you feel like a royal.

While Venice’s Carnival boasts various parades and parties throughout its winding streets, those who are seeking something more exclusive need not look further than the Glass Slippers Masquerade Ball. The Glass Cathedral on the island of Murano is host to this night of celebration. Guests can live just like 18th century Venetian aristocrats with a ball that captures culture and liveliness all in one.

The Glass Slippers Masquerade Ball

Dating all the way back to 1162, Carnival in Venice has been a staple in Italian tradition and culture. The celebration was founded when the Republic of Venice defeated the Ulrico Patriarch of Aquileia in battle. To honor this victory, the people of Venice gathered in San Marco’s square to dance and celebrate for nights on end. Carnival eventually evolved into a baroque festival during the Renaissance period to demonstrate Venice’s prestigious image to the world. Since then, elaborate masks, luxurious costumes, and packed parades have made Carnival a world-famous experience for locals and jetsetters alike.

An event as grand as the Glass Slipper Ball requires a standout venue. The Glass Cathedral  boasts towering ceilings and exquisite chandeliers—perfect for stepping back in time. It is one of the oldest structures on Murano but was recently restored and renovated. Completed with large banquet halls and a full-service bar, there is no better place to celebrate Carnival than at this historic landmark. For transportation, guests can take a boat from the “Fondamente Nuove” stop “A” at 7:10 pm.

Marking the beginning of the ball at 7:30 pm is a glass blowing show. Murano is famous for its handmade glass structures, with pieces ranging from jewelry to mirrors. Two international glass makers will wind and sculpt melted glass into an intricate masterpiece through traditional glass making techniques. This experience is unique to Murano, making it stand out from any other Carnival event in all of Venice.

After this artistic arrangement, guests will be served appetizers, followed by dinner, and eventually desert. Referred to as the “Royal Dinner”, meals will be served on the Ca’Rezzonico floor. Various musical performances will entrance the crowd as they dine on luxurious cuisine and drinks. An open bar including beer, prosecco, and soft drinks will be available, along with hard alcohol for purchase.

Once the plates are cleared and drinks continue to be poured, an international DJ set will command the space. This set is scheduled to perform until 3am, ensuring that guests can party the night away with a variety of tunes. For those who wish to opt out of dinner and get straight to the dancing, After Dinner party tickets are available and guests will be admitted at 10:30 pm.

Dress code, dress code, dress code. Possibly one of the most important aspects of the evening is deciding what to wear. Period costumes are a must. Guests are encouraged to channel the baroque period, yet can tap into their creative side with beading, color, fabrics, and layers. There is no such thing as “too much” at an event like this. For the After Dinner event, guests are required to wear period clothing or an evening gown, along with a masquerade mask.

Any event in Carnival is not complete without an intricate mask. Back when Carnival was founded, everyone throughout the city sported masquerade masks to protect their own identity and eliminate social differences. Today, they are more of a symbolic piece of Carnival to keep tradition alive. “Maschera più bella” refers to the most beautiful mask, so keep an ear open for this endearing compliment at the ball.

Carnival in Venice is a must-see experience in anyone’s lifetime. The Glass Slippers Masquerade Ball encapsulates all the glamorous traditions of Carnival along with much, much more. So, fasten that mask, secure those glass slippers, and get ready for the ball that fairytale dreams are made of.
