They say money can’t buy happiness. However, as famously argued by American rock musician, David Lee Roth, ‘‘it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it’’.  Looking at the charming setting of Antigua’s largest nautical gathering, it’s hard to disagree. In the sunny sailing capital of the Caribbean, dozens of vessels await their annual debut. Single, double and triple-decker cruisers proudly align the pier, matching the majesty of their surroundings. Friendly faces dot the port, welcoming industry experts with the laid-back charm of the West Indies. The stage is set for the Antigua Charter Yacht Show, the Caribbean’s festive maritime meeting.

In addition to exclusive tours, the Antigua Charter Yacht Show offers the unique opportunity to network in the sunshine. Yachting-fanatics can meet and mingle with some of the biggest names in yachting journalism, as well as with some of the most elite charter yacht-houses worldwide. The final day of the event is a sailing day, where attendees can test-drive some of the world’s most luxurious cruisers through the crystal Caribbean waters.

However, it isn’t just the yachts on display, as crew members also get a chance to showcase their talents. At the annual Concours de Chef, competitors must cook up an imaginative ‘‘Welcome Aboard’’ dinner for charter guests, judged by a panel of culinary experts. Each year, a chosen theme combines the show’s exotic surroundings with a taste of luxury; caviar and fresh tropical fruit are among past required ingredients. To ensure exquisite presentation, there is the concomitant Table Decorating Contest, where stewards and stewardesses must create an enticing table setting to welcome guests. The meal can be served anywhere onboard the vessels, from the elegant dining saloons to the star-bathed sundecks. To celebrate their Diamond Jubilee Celebration, the theme for 2021’s culinary competition is ‘‘A Taste of the 60s’’, promising an imaginative blast from the past.

Despite the captivating cruisers on display, it’s impossible to forget the utopian setting of the event. When they’re not exhibiting luxury yachts, guests can explore Antigua’s dreamy pink-and-white beaches, jungle-like greenery and colourful coral reefs. The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nelson’s Dockyard, is a spectacle in itself, fully restored to its original splendour. Around the site, elegant colonial buildings and historic forts dot the landscape, accessible by hiking trails. The warmth of the rich blue sky is matched only by the friendly demeanour of the locals, who welcome tourists onto their island with a charming familiarity.
