Stratford-upon-Avon is synonymous with William Shakespeare, and arriving at the Arden Hotel puts guests at the centre of his life. It’s flanked by the RSC theatre; Shakespeare’s Schoolroom and Guildhall; and his final home, New Place. The rest of the hotel carries this idea of touching down in ‘Shakespeare Land’, with framed pictures of Shakespearean actors adorning the Club Bar walls and pre-theatre meals in the double-AA-rosette Waterside Brasserie. After a night sitting stage-front, the Arden’s 45 sumptuous bedrooms have every amenity needed to make your small-town retreat reposeful.

The Arden Hotel

Rooms at The Arden Hotel

The Arden Hotel is jointly owned by the RSC and the Eden Hotel Collection: two brands known for characterful styles and matchless experiences. The Arden extends this legacy to include a boutique veneer upon a property with indelible ties to Shakespeare’s writing.

With such owners, the hotel has been offering overnight stays with theatre ticket packages since its grand opening. Today, a two-course dinner, two theatre tickets, and a full English breakfast are included with one of the hotel’s Classic rooms. Attention to comfort is complete here, with a careful selection of ESPA toiletries, spa-like robes and slippers, and flowerpots that add a natural element to the room’s sanctuary aesthetic.

Of the 45 rooms, the most lavish and spacious of them all, is the Feature Room, which continues the Arden’s decorating theme of sleek lines and neutral undertones. To this, the Feature Room boasts a super-king-sized bed with complementary scatter cushions. The matching armchairs and jasmine-white couch (which can be turned into a sofa bed) are the kind of comfy that leaves one struggling to get up. With a deep soaking tub and walk-in shower, the bathroom is designed to leave you embracing the blissed-out vibe, while the mini-fridge and hospitality tray are the perfect companions for an indulgent, hassle-free evening.

Dining at The Arden

An assortment of iris- and orchid-purple hues coalesce with greyish blues to form the colour palette of the No. 44 Brasserie. The collection of circular and cosy window-seat tables adds an artsy edge to the restaurant’s relaxed aesthetic, while the large windows and patio doors allow the space to take full advantage of natural daylight. For an award-winning double-AA-rosette restaurant, there’s no pretentiousness; rather, a diligent focus on making the restaurant feel like your breakfast or dining room at home.

But once the food appears, it’s a whole different ball game. There are British classics, like scrumptious beefburgers, and a selection of UK cheeses for dessert. However, truly exceptional is the main course of spring vegetable risotto. Topped with a smattering of rocket, its vegan cheese, soft garden peas, and sundried tomatoes create a delectable creamy texture which contrasts beautifully with the crunchy broccoli and sugarsnaps. The wine menu is extensive, and staff are at hand to offer their expertise.

Breakfast is likewise served in the Brasserie, on the outdoor terrace overlooking the Royal Shakespeare Theatre or in their exquisite gardens (which can also be hired for events, weddings, and unique activities like cocktail making classes). One can choose from a full English breakfast or multiple other egg dishes, while the Continental breakfast ranges from toast, cereals, and granola with yoghurts to the ever-favourite pain au chocolat.

The Club Bar

The Brooke Suite accommodates up to 40 guests and is offered to those looking for a venue to host private dining, wedding receptions, or business meetings. Nearby, the Club Bar is a contemporary take on the traditional gentleman’s club. Such a concept is new to Stratford-upon-Avon, and its lavishly-etched, gold-accented bar offer residents morning coffees or late-night drinks with a bust of Shakespeare and portraits of the RSC’s actors watching over you – lest you forget you’re in Stratford!

Afternoon Tea at The Arden Hotel

The Arden Hotel honours Britain’s afternoon tea heritage by serving homemade fruit or plain scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam. One can also select cream teas or a chef’s selection of sandwiches and cakes, presented on Sarah Horne Botanicals china in their airy and elegantly-designed vintage lounge.

For those on the go, the Arden Hotel offers afternoon tea takeaways, leaving you with endless opportunities to explore Stratford-upon-Avon. Perhaps a picnic by the River Avon? A quick stroll to Holy Trinity Church, Shakespeare’s Birthplace, or even into the town centre? The Arden Hotel’s superb location means all this, and more is right on your doorstep.

Considering the Arden Hotel’s position, it is unsurprising that their emphasis is on local history and modern comforts. This combination adds a delicious exclusivity to the property, as guests know they can only find overnight stays with theatre tickets, award-winning cuisine, views of noteworthy British landmarks, and stupendous service at The Arden Hotel!
