Deborah Calmeyer

ROAR AFRICA, a platform for tourists to explore the depths of the African continent since 2005, is built upon founder Deborah Calmeyer’s upbringing on a farm in Zimbabwe and her love and passion for the land, Always traveling to the bush with her family, she says, “I have always had a philanthropic mission attached to every journey to make a positive change in Africa and for Africans led by native-born guides and a curated network of local experts.”

After 16 years in the luxury travel space, Calmeyer has set out to present her guests a truly one-of-a-kind safari experience on the continent by partnering with Emirates, a company that shares her vision and philosophy. “This is an unprecedented collaboration between the ultimate luxury brands in aviation and safari,” says Calmeyer. It didn’t take much deliberation for Calmeyer in her search for a strategic partner as she has been a keen follower of how the airline has run its business. “Emirates was one of the first airlines in the world to stop the transportation of animal trophies from hunting, and there is a strong conservation vision shared between both our brands.”

Internally dubbed the inaugural Greatest Safari on Earth, the once-in-a-lifetime experience begins the moment you board the sumptuous Emirates A319 private jet in Dubai. Providing the sole means of international transport throughout the journey (from Dubai to Africa and to and from the four African countries visited), the glamourous jet features 10 private suites with a private shower spa and powder room, expansive lounge, and the discreet yet world-class service of the cabin crew.

The first stop on the journey in Africa is two magical days in Zimbabwe at the gigantic Zambezi National Park. Guests will stay at the exclusive Mpala Jena Camp, which only has four tented suites and one sprawling two-bedroom villa overlooking the Zambezi River. While here, guests will be able to embark on exciting river excursions and take guided tours to the historic Victoria Falls town 10 miles away.

Next, just a short jet and private helicopter journey away, is the Okavango Delta, a swampy inland delta in Botswana, for a three-night stay at Duba Plains Camp. With only five bespoke tents, each raised on a recycled railway-sleeper decking and feature private plunge pools, the camp evokes a bygone era of the 1920s with a comfortable lounge, interactive kitchen, wine cellar and library.

"The final top is three days in the Volcanoes National Park. Covering over 62 square miles of rainforest and encompassing five volcanoes, this national park stretches through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo."

Five hours away by private jet, Masai Mara is next on the agenda, sporting a large national game reserve in Narok, Kenya where travelers get to rest their heads at the large Mara Plains Camp. Set in over 41,000 hectares of the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy and hidden in the thick forest on a bend in the Ntiakitiak River, the Mara Plains Camp provides an oasis upon arrival. An elevated wooden walkway over the Ntiakitiak River reveals a view of flat-topped acacia trees. Then, across a bridge and a short climb, awaits an endless horizon and camp designed to pay homage to Swahili heritage.

After enjoying a scenic hot air balloon and witnessing the annual Great Migration in Olare Motorogi Conservancy, the final top is three days in the Volcanoes National Park. Covering over 62 square miles of rainforest and encompassing five volcanoes, this national park stretches through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Here, guests stay at the breathtaking Singita Kwitonda Lodge which is set on the edge of the park in Rwanda. Whether relaxing in one of the eight luxurious suites which includes a private heated plunge pool, wellness treatment area and more, the lodge is in the area where more than a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas find refuge.

“Many people want to ‘do’ Africa in one swoop and private-jet travel, which is the best way to do this, is more in demand than ever. In creating ‘the greatest safari on earth’, we’re giving 10 luxury travelers an opportunity to visit Africa’s four most iconic destinations without the headache of multiple flights and excessive travel,” says Calmeyer. At the same time, the trip has a groundbreaking offset program. One step further than carbon neutrality, it empowers climate positivity, funding solar projects in the villages, tree planting, and much more, and transforming luxury travel for the better.
