There’s a reason the Ionian island of Paxos attracts the well-to-do and an A-list crowd: it’s remote, the azure seas rival that of the Caribbean and people generally leave you alone. It’s an island that exudes that famous Greek philoxenia – kindness to strangers.

It’s a high-class island too. Having no airport helps as it doesn’t attract the package holiday crowd…they tend to stay on nearby Corfu. Indeed Paxos is approx. one hour away by ferry, or take a private helicopter to the island’s landing pad. Why would you do this? As mentioned: Paxos attracts A-listers such as Morgan Freeman and HNW’s who need privacy, and accommodation options offered on the island certainly reflects this.

Most people come to the island and stay in private villas, to ensure their privacy needs are met. Nowhere is this more guaranteed than in Villa Glaros. Arrive at the quaint harbor of Gaios in your private transfer boat from Corfu – Villa Glaros arranges this for you. Why not head for a shop around the boutique establishments? There are several independent little places opened amongst the traditional cobbled streets offering high-class swimwear, boutique Grecian clothing and then afterwards, relax at any of the harbor side cafes for a view of the turquoise and green waters.

Villa Glaros is located up the hill from Gaios, a good 10-minute drive in the hardy vehicle provided for you during your stay. At the top you’ll reach the tiny hamlet of Magazia – consisting of the ubiquitous Greek Church with sublime bell tower, dating back to Venetian times as with most of the architecture of the old houses and churches on the Ionian islands. There’s also a small traditional taverna here where all the locals come to eat – superb if you’re after a real, literal taste of Greek life. The hamlet used to be the island’s capital during pirate times due to its hilltop position.

Villa Glaros itself is located here – down a dirt track that requires you to rent or have access to a sturdy vehicle. The state of the road means navigating it takes a good 20 minutes through pine woodland, yet the upside to this also guarantees you privacy during your stay.

Past the villa’s tennis courts at the top of the property and you enter through the remote controlled gates, opening up to a paved driveway. All around you the manicured gardens are visible with postmodern sculptures dotted around the grounds.

The villa is perched within 10,000 sq meters of Greek hillside overlooking a small rocky bay and is staged, incorporating floodlit tennis court at the top of the property, a pine forest and those sculpted gardens, hidden wooden tree house for the children and young at heart amongst you and finally steps leading to a private cove that’s stocked for watersports such as SUP boarding or kayaking. And that’s not all: the heated outdoor infinity pool offers sea views, as does the adjoining fully stocked gym.

Its architectural style reflects that of the island’s traditional masonry in its stonework, with a modern twist. Step inside and you’re greeted with floor to ceiling windows in the living area offering uninterrupted views of the mainland in the distance across the sea. Seven bedrooms: three in the main house with four on the lower level have private verandas, perfect for groups of friends or a larger family with children.

Dining outside can seat up to 12 people – and rental of the villa offers a full chef and concierge service if you wish – a couple who live on site so you don’t need to lift a finger – your travel and gastronomy needs all taken care of. There’s plenty of space to hide away if visiting with large groups: the upper terrace, hammock hideaway outside or study in the upper echelons of the house guarantees seclusion and peace.

There’s no need to join any organized boat trips – Villa Glaros has this all wrapped up too. With the island averaging 8 or more hours of sunshine from April to mid-October, more in the high summer – a trip to the various hidden coves and lighthouses and across to neighbouring Antipaxos is a must. Explore with the villa’s own speedboat and on call skipper.

For a work out, yoga classes, fitness trainer, tennis coach are at your disposal. Beyond that, a chef and concierge if required all lend to that personal experience.

Villa Glaros isn’t merely a place to stay, it’s a home away from home and you’ll find it hard to wrench yourself away from its seclusion and peaceful environment. It’s no wonder the HNW’s choose it again and again as their Greek island paradise. Book your stay at Villa Glaros with Fly Me To The Moon Travel.
