Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe – and rightfully so. With its rich heritage, enchanting landscapes and lovely temperatures, millions of travellers each year bathe in its diverse culture and let themselves be stunned by its iconic destinations. And while the bustling cities and their well-known landmarks are undeniably captivating, there are a myriad of hidden gems in Spain, that are only waiting to be discovered by intrepid explorers like us. Among these jewels lies Las Médulas – the marrows, an awe-inspiring historical and geological wonder in the Spanish province León.

Discover and immerse yourself in a majestic landscape

Nestled in the northwestern corner of Spain, Las Médulas is a true testament to the absolute ingenuity of the ancient Roman Empire’s engineering. So apart from sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a freshwater system and public health (thank you, Monty Python), what else have the Romans done? Well, this place was once the site of the largest open-pit gold mine in Rome, with a now incredibly unique landscape that was formed through the remarkable mining technique known as “ruina montium” – literally translated as “the fall of the mountains”. And that is exactly what the Romans did: they diverted rivers (so a technique based on hydraulic power!) to erode the mountains and thus reveal hidden gold deposits. The result of this is a breathtaking expanse of red- and gold-coloured cliffs, deep canyons, and otherworldly rock formations that truly inspire awe.

A stunning glimpse into history

It is because of this, that Las Médulas holds a captivating historical significance, dating back over two millennia. The gold was extracted from this region during the first century AD and the gains were the financial fundament for an extravagant amount of ambitious construction projects. The mine was used for an enormous 250 years and yielded in total over five million Roman pounds – and over one and a half million kilos of pure, raw gold.

Exploring the natural and cultural wonders

Because of its rich historical background, as well as its incredible uniqueness, Las Médulas has been meticulously persevered as a cultural and natural park, since it became  a UNESCO World Heritage in the year 1997. This designation not only protects the historical significance of the site but also safeguards its diverse flora and fauna. There are various hiking trails that wind throughout the canyons of the mountain range and offer panoramic views of the stunning landscape.

Along the way, one can encounter a plethora of plant species and may even spot a variety of interesting birdlife, making it additionally a paradise for nature enthusiasts.

The truly magical ambience of Las Médulas unfolds during sunrise and sunset. As the sun casts its rays upon the red and golden cliffs, the colours intensify and create an almost ethereal, almost surreal atmosphere. The everchanging hues and the interplay of light and shadows form an unforgettable experience together and are prone to leave a mark in the hearts of all who are fortunate enough to witness it.

Where to stay?

Though the Las Médulas is quite a bit off the beaten path, there are still many charming and luxurious accommodations available for visitors seeking an immersive experience. Ponferrada for example, roughly 20 kilometres away, offers a range of cozy hotels, delicious bed and breakfasts and rustic guesthouses, that provide a comfortable and intimate base for explorations.
