Some people say the concept of the ‘American dream’ is dead. The term is defined by a phrase: ‘That every person has the freedom and opportunity to succeed and attain a better life.’ Apply that to travel, and we’d say the American dream is very much alive. Travel is so much more accessible and desired than ever. And so, we birth the travel edition of the American dream. Read on for our version of the American dream, inspired by some of the best locations in America.

Florida, But Not Disney Florida

Most people think of Florida, and their mind wanders to Disney or Miami. They’re both excellent places, but there’s so much more to Florida than that. Jacksonville is up there with something more authentically American. It has one of the largest park systems in the US, sitting just outside the city. Some of the best include:

  • + Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary
  • + Seaton Creek Preserve
  • + Pumpkin Hill Creek Preserve State Park
  • + Lonnie C. Miller Sr Regional Park

For a hotel in Jacksonville, the Windsor Inn is a great option for comfort and convenience. And you’re closer to the preserves and nature parks.

San Antonio, Texas

Sitting in south-central Texas, the colonial history and heritage stand out in everything from the architecture to the rivers that run through it. The River Walk winds through the centre, and it’s one of the most beautiful city walks you might do in America. It’s full of beautiful waterside restaurants serving traditional Latino/Spanish food. You’ll love Domingo Restaurant and Boudro’s on the Riverwalk.

San Antonio was Spanish in the early 18th century and was part of the Spanish Empire and later Mexico before gaining its independence. But the culture still seeps out into every corner of the city. Just outside the city is the Missions National Historical Park, a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site that tells the story of the region’s Spanish colonial past.

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is everything Southern American is. It lives and breathes music and incredible chicken. There’s blues, rock, and soul pouring out from bars and live venues on Broadway, with the distant scent of hot chicken and grilled meats filling the streets. The atmosphere is infectious.

Even if you’re not a fan of country music, you have to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame. It’s part museum, part interactive archive, and it captures the spirit of the city. For something slower, you’ll love Centennial Park. It’s a full-scale replica of the Parthenon.  Nashville also has a growing food scene that’s branching out from its hot chicken roots. Try one of the farm-to-table restaurants for a taste of Tennessee beyond the deep fryer. The Farm House in the centre of Nashville is one of the best.

The American dream lives on in every city through our travel edition. There are so many incredible cities and states to stay in. We recommend straying away from the typical areas and finding something with a more unique vibe and attractions for a more authentic experience.
