Whether it’s the freedom of the open road or the ever changing landscapes that draw you to embark on a European road trip, driving is one of the best ways to explore the continent. But with so much to see and do, it’s easy not to know where to start, so here are a few ideas for your next European road trip.

Germany: The Romantic Road

The Romantic Road is a historic and picturesque route filled with medieval towns and vast countryside. The trip covers 217 miles and takes around seven to ten days to complete.

Along the way you can stop at destinations such as Dinkelsbühl – one of the most preserved towns from the middle ages, and Neuschwanstein Castle – the inspiration for the castle in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Along with several must-see destinations, Germany’s excellent road infrastructure makes it the perfect place for a road trip.

Italy: The Amalfi Coast

If you’re looking for a slightly shorter road trip, the Amalfi Coast is the perfect option. Although it only spans for 37 miles, this trip takes around five days to complete, with the hilly landscapes turning this short distance into a worthy road trip.

Throughout the trip you can explore the ruins of Pompeii, lounge by the beach at Positano, and enjoy panoramic views of the coast in Ravello.

Switzerland: The Swiss Alps

For a week-long retreat, the Swiss Alps are an ideal destination. The 143-mile route takes roughly seven to ten days to complete and offers unbeatable mountain views throughout. Stop at Lucerne for a boat ride on Lake Lucerne, paraglide in Interlaken – the adventure capital of Switzerland, or take a stroll through the charming village of Grindelwald.

Ireland: The Wild Atlantic Way

Stretching over 1,553 miles, this road trip is suited for those looking for a longer venture and a cooler climate. It takes 10-14 days to complete the route that begins in Derry and ends in Kinsale.
