There’s a big, red cat in the middle of a swarm of birds. For some, that may be cause for concern. For others, they’re just experiencing a kaleidoscopic stay at The Bird in Bath. Artwork ranging from a red cat to stuffed birds and abstract canvases play into the organized chaos at this boutique hotel. A mosaic-style mural at the reception seems to be made from recycled china. Not a single item in the whole of the property is a duplicate of anything seen before. It is just the start of what can only be described as the most colorfully luxurious stay one can have in Bath.

The Bird in Bath is a quaint boutique hotel nestled in some of the city’s most notable attractions. With picturesque views of Bath Abbey, guests will find that the location is ideal to make the most of a Somerset visit. The mansion itself accentuates the Victorian flair which occupied the property before it got restored into what it is now. The cold, traditional and stern details which typically come from such a conservative era are replaced with colorful, bold and eccentric murals and artifacts. All of their 31 rooms are thoughtfully designed, each hosting a variety of framed artwork, en-suite facilities and opulent chandeliers. However, the overall atmosphere embodies a more quirky direction, turning this luxury hotel into a cosy place to stay when visiting Bath.

"The dramatic designs are paired with the mesmerizing views overlooking Bath’s nature and city life"

No room is to be the same. This is what owners, Ian and Christa Taylor, have been working on since the beginning. The property used to be known as the County Hotel, before it was acquired by the new owners. They completed renovations in 2019 when Ian stated: “Christa and I have always had a great passion for hotels and creating something that’s fun, eclectic and different for Bath, while ensuring luxury, comfort and the best possible service on every level.”

The Bird is part of the Kaleidoscope Collection, a prestige which includes two other boutique hotels around the area. It comprises of an independent collection of hotels throughout Bath and Wiltshire which strive to keep creativity and innovation at its core. The owners’ creative vision is seen by the simple fact that the hotel houses unique and one-off items. A quick peek inside and guests will experience on overwhelming urge to be their unapologetic self, just like this boutique hotel.

Whilst numerous hotels like the more simple approach in terms of decor, the Bird in Bath decided to go down a much more maximalist outlook. Their ‘more-is-more’ style is seen scattered all over their property, channeling the creative flair of being a member of the Kaleidoscope Collection. The dramatic designs are paired with the mesmerizing views overlooking Bath’s nature and city life. It’s safe to say the owners successfully managed to inject the imposing Victorian mansion with eclectic fun. With a name like ‘Bird’, it’s no surprise that bird decor is a recurring theme around the boutique hotel. From stuffed silhouettes to embroidered cushions, birds rule.

To really experience what this property is all about, their ‘Roomy King’ room says it all. Its theatrical approach to decor is evident. With the bold wallpaper and eccentric details, it guarantees a splash-out stay for guests. Whilst the focus may be on the color and pop of the room, it’s easy to get distracted by one of the best views in the house: a classic Bath view over the Abbey.

"West country ingredients ensure and authentic yet sophisticated palette, creating robust and hearty dishes for all guests"

If guests have never contemplated getting seconds after a meal, they will here. The best part? Their sustainability standards. At the hotel’s restaurant, chefs make it their priority to source out ingredients from local farmers and fishermen in the area. It’s no surprise, given that their ethos is ‘honest, seasonal, local and fresh.’ They offer a variety of meals, from private dining to afternoon tea. Just like their maximalist decor, their food priorities are not left on the back burner. The restaurant is known as Plate, and it is as furnished and up-beat as the rest of their property.

Regarding the food, nothing beats authentic and local cuisine. This is something which the Bird at Bath delivers. West country ingredients ensure and authentic yet sophisticated palette, creating robust and hearty dishes for all guests. The natural light and creative orientation balance each other out, mimicking an elaborate meal for everyone involved. Layered meat pies, rich puddings and generous breakfasts are a guarantee.

Bath is a city in the North East of Somerset. Known for its Roman-built baths, the city became a World Heritage Site in 1987. It is one of the most visited cities in England by oversea visitors. Bath offers a lot more than its intriguing past; spas, boat tours, meticulous and lush gardens and local artisan shops. The Bird is located in a prime location for guests to take advantage of this historically significant city. For example, it is only a ten minute walk down one of Bath’s most striking Georgian streets to get to the main shopping area. Of course, not far from there are the infamous Roman baths — certainly can’t be missed.

A Victorian-style villa full of bold, contemporary art is not something you see everyday. It’s only fitting that the Bird be a part of the Kaleidoscope Collection, further leveling up with its fine dining experience at the hotel’s restaurant. In such a historically significant city, the Bird’s homage to authentic and local cuisine is admirable — as well as delicious. The blend of culture, tradition and creativity is balanced out perfectly at the Bird.
