Historical Background

The festival is located in Bayreuth, a small town in Northern Germany. Bayreuth dotted with historical buildings and museums, makes it a hotspot for the arts. The Bayreuth festival itself began as a rough sketch by Richard Wagner, a famous 19th-century German composer, in 1850. On May 22nd, 1872 the foundation was built, showcasing innovative building measures to ensure a unique opera experience.  It’s opening day on August 13th, 1876, with the help of a donation from King Ludwig II marks the first Bayreuth Festival. To celebrate the occasion, a large firework display kicked off the historic opening ceremony. The Wagner family continues to manage the festival in its modern-day account and keeping in tradition, the event showcases exclusively Wagner’s works.
