An endless wall of bubbles slowly forms as you sit in the warm water and let yourself switch off for the day. It’s not until the reservation time for dinner approaches that guests can slowly pat themselves down with the plushy robes available, get dressed and make their way down the elevator to the restaurant on the ground floor. At Avenue Hotel in Canberra, it is like staying in a relaxation oasis where your only worry is running out of bubble bath. It is a haven for those who need those days off to completely and utterly wind down.

One of the best feelings when checking-in is getting told that your room is on the top floor of the hotel. Especially when you know that your suite has a balcony stretching the whole length of your room. The Spa Suites in particular face the Black Mountain which creates a mesmerizing backdrop as the suns sets, creating an orangey, pink glow that shines into the suite. From the living room area, king-sized bed and rainfall shower, this bedroom is perfect for those who want to relax after a late breakfast at their downstairs restaurant.

At Avenue Hotel, their breakfast buffet is located at their culinary establishment, Marble and Grain. Therefore, far from being a room with four walls and little to no decor, guests can enjoy their breakfasts with the same refined atmosphere as a fine dining experience.

You have the choice from the hearty savory meals to the refreshing fruit and yogurt options. Poached eggs, beans, roasted tomatoes, hash browns are staple components for an Australian-style breakfast which the hotel knows all too well. Additionally, they prepare a variety of pastries, jams and a simple toast-grilling station for a more European take. The chefs at the breakfast buffet prepare some of the meals fresh to order, from fluffy pancakes to eggs your way. Guests can also enjoy fresh fruit smoothies or make their own juices.

"From classic wagyu filets and beef tenderloin to carb-based sides perfectly seasoned for the protein-fest, Marble and Grain take the barbecue tradition to a whole new level of refined"

Marble and Grain has the same cozy atmosphere as a pub but with a much more upscale seating area. The dark, concrete walls and wood panelling marries well with the soft-toned leather booths. The lighting works well to bring out the brass details whilst the open kitchen area makes for a different form of entertainment during the meal. To best sum up the affair at Marble and Grain, think classic European steakhouse with a chic, Australian flair.

Whilst it is a steakhouse, they take their fish just as serious. From the scallop starter to the crispy john dory as a main, they are just as succulent. The scallops are coated in a buttery lemon dressing whilst the john dory is served on a purée of truffle infused cauliflower. If you want something light and refreshing, the seafood dishes at Marble and Grain can’t be underestimated.

It goes without saying that their showstoppers are their plates of grilled meat. From one-person portions to sharer plates for the whole table, the team of chefs know how to perfect the protein. The seared duck breast is colorfully presented with a sour cherry jus on a bed of roasted oat purée. If the table is looking to fully take advantage of the fact that they are in a steakhouse, it only makes sense to order a t-bone fiorentina weighing in at one kilogram. From classic wagyu filets and beef tenderloin to carb-based sides perfectly seasoned for the protein-fest, Marble and Grain take the barbecue tradition to a whole new level of refined.

The Avenue Hotel in Canberra can easily be an all-encompassing establishment, one where guests can choose to give into their lazy-day desires and essentially not have to leave. The classic interiors, comfortable living spaces and all-in-all no-nonsense atmosphere is refreshing. Similarly, the two-person hot tub and fine dining experience add that special touch which makes the experience at the hotel all the more memorable. Even just for a couple of nights, a stay at the Avenue Hotel makes for a well-rounded experience to explore Australia’s capital city.
