Midsummer House was built at the end of the 19th century as a private residence and has been home to dog breeders, dressmakers, artists and needleworkers. However, nearly 150 years after its construction, the Victorian villa has taken on a new set of occupants: world-class chefs. Opened in 1998 by chef patron Daniel Clifford, Midsummer House has become known as the ‘best fine dining restaurant in Cambridge’ and still exudes the civilised charm of its heyday as a lavish country home. Backed by the twinkling River Cam and facing the historic Midsummer Common, guests can dine surrounded by the tranquil nature of what remains one of England’s most stylish cities.

Midsummer House is a sophisticated restaurant on the banks of Cambridge’s River Cam. While an elegant Victorian villa is the face of the experience, the ever-evolving and contemporary British cuisine within its walls is not stuck in the past. Chef patron Daniel Clifford and head chef Mark Abbott devise thoughtful dishes that focus on quality seasonal produce and boast bold flavours and unique forms. The sumptuous dining experience has been rewarded with myriad accolades including #l Travellers’ Choice Favourite Fine Dining Restaurants United Kingdom, #2 Travellers’ Choice Favourite Fine Dining Restaurants Worldwide, AA Chefs’ Chef of the Year 2015 and Winner BBC Great British Menu 2012 and 2013 (Daniel) and 2016 (Mark). To top it off, Midsummer House is the only two Michelin-starred restaurant in the East of England.

However – as with all impressive feats – it wasn’t without a hint of adversity that Clifford’s restaurant has become so widely acclaimed. Following two devastating floods just before the turn of the millennium, the building has been renovated to provide an exceptional guest experience that doesn’t detract from the property’s rich history. The large kitchen ranks among the best in the world and the extensive dining area and conservatory are home to 14 tables at which guests can marvel at the unique culinary offerings of Midsummer House. For an extra element of luxury, private dining is also available and can accommodate up to 12 guests. Within this intimate setting, guests can enjoy either a set five-course menu or a complete tasting menu as part of their special gathering

Clifford and Abbott make an exceptional team. Both draw from their extensive experience in the culinary world and personal inspiration to create memorable dishes. Together, they produce astonishing pairings and unique flavour combinations that never fail to enchant those lucky enough to experience them.

Midsummer House’s eight-course tasting menu is a testament to this innovation and experience. Some of the dishes experiment with the harmony of flavour between meat and fruit including the strawberry plant pot (duck-liver mousse, red pepper, strawberries) and the Irish oyster (Carlingford Lough oysters, passionfruit, green pepper, jalapeños). Other plates play with sweet and savoury combinations including Loch Duart salmon (slow-cooked Loch Duart salmon, white chocolate, caviar, finger lime) and chicken (grilled chicken wing, spiced red pepper, smoked candy floss). No dish escapes a unique twist or the consistent element of refined playfulness that seems to be the essence of Midsummer House. The desserts are no different and boast pickled roses, coriander white chocolate, and lemongrass jelly.

The attention to detail at Midsummer House makes for a seamless dining experience. On the approach along the delicately paved path to the entrance, guests can admire an immaculate lawn bordered by tasteful shrubbery as they pass through the main archway printed with the name of the eatery. Inside they are treated to service of the highest quality where every measure is taken to ensure a luxurious stay; tables are laid to perfection and staff are patient and caring. Original fittings are complemented by modern design twists and visitors can discover the history of Midsummer House through its effortless details. For example, pay attention to the original engraving of the external gate that encourages guests to shut & fasten gate. Midsummer House pays homage to its extensive past while ensuring guests experience the height of comfort as they dine.

Midsummer House consistently proves itself to be worthy of all the trophies atop its mantelpiece. It is surely one of the country’s most innovative and playful fine-dining restaurants but doesn’t abandon its charm, elegance or rich history. Guests will be impressed by immaculate service, wonderful views and – of course – delightful food. Midsummer House should be at the top of every list of those seeking a refined but exciting culinary experience in the UK.
