Before the 1940s, South Tyrol was part of Austria, a rich heritage that has left a mark on the linguistic and cultural landscape of the area. As a result of the geopolitical disruption of World War I, The Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919 officially transferred South Tyrol from Austria to Italy.
