Where a modest fisherman’s settlement once sprawled across the sands – without electricity or even running water – an elegant and commanding seaside resort has become a magnet for international jetsetters. The beachside town of José Ignacio offers an upscale yet relaxed escape that attracts travellers from all over the world; it has earned the nickname ‘The Hamptons of Uruguay’ being to Argentinians what the Long Island getaway is to New Yorkers. With inviting stretches of wide, sandy beaches and a host of fantastic restaurants and delightful hotels, this unique escape exudes barefoot luxury and leisure.

El Chiringo is a lively restaurant on the picture-perfect shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Steps away on the white sugar beaches you’ll see a sea of umbrellas with oiled, toned and tanned bodies lazing about while soaking up the sun.  At one of José Ignacio’s most famous beach clubs, those taking a break from the sun chill out on low-slung deckchairs that spill out from the eatery’s wooden decking onto the warm sand, sipping on scrumptious cocktails shaded by bamboo rafters that muddle bright rays of the hot Uruguayan sun.

One can argue that from December to April, El Chiringo the sexiest place on the planet, replete with guests who arrived earlier that week on their private jet from Brazil, mixed in with locals who arrived by bicycle all there to soak up the sun and cool off in the surf. Couples, groups of friends, and families come to this rustic beach retreat at all hours of the day. Some come for a morning brunch with bloodshot eyes there to soak up the remnants of a night of partying, and others enjoy long and lazy lunches with family, spending quality time with their children and making memories over good food. This is arguably José Ignacio’s hottest table; throughout the day there is a wait that many will find totally worth their while. As the sun begins to set, DJs set up to play sunset tunes as guests dance barefoot on the sand while toasting to the good life.  From afar, the restaurant is illuminated by a shimmering moon with the fairy lights woven between the branches of the cabana offering a touch of magic and enchantment.

The culinary offering at El Chiringo is characterised by fresh local ingredients, bold flavours and comfort. Guests can choose from dishes ranging from delicate burrata and tomatoes served on focaccia to a delicious bowl of fresh and crispy prawns sprinkled with colourful coriander and a dash of lemon juice. Most will opt for the South American staple, ceviche or perhaps the catch of the day. As you would expect from such a location, El Chiringo takes much of its culinary influence from the sea. But here, the mission is about more than the food.

Don’t expect starched white tablecloths or a dégustation menu of micro plates of this and that. You won’t find that here. What you will find is good honest food that is fresh, delicious, and locally sourced. In place of fine china, metal plates are the norm and instead of stiff, haughty service, the servers are friendly, personable, and as quick to crack a joke as they are to point out the new dish on the menu.  The intangible there that one will take note of, is the vibe. The setting, the relaxed reggae music, the action at the bar and the kitchen, and the good cheer of all the guests that drink and dine there. All with a view of one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It just doesn’t get much better than this.

"Barefoot luxury intertwined with delectable and leisurely Uruguayan dining, El Chiringo provides its guests with an unparalleled experience."

The town’s main landmark, Punta José Ignacio Lighthouse, offers one of the best views of the town and its coast. The striking panoramic view from the top is well worth the climb up the narrow spiral staircase. The Playa Brava is perhaps one of José Ignacio’s most popular beaches. Here, a giant concrete hand – known as Hombre Emergiendo a la Vida – seemingly reaches up from the sand. Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal created the remarkable piece as a warning to swimmers in the rough waters of La Barra up the coast. This challenging environment for those seeking a relaxing swim in the waves makes it a surfer’s paradise. La Barra’s swell creates fantastic conditions for those on boards and is only 10 minutes from the nearby city, Punta Del Este. This cosmopolitan beach resort, a favourite of wealthy North and South Americans hosts myriad chic homes, bars and restaurants, and is a great day trip from José Ignacio.

Barefoot luxury intertwined with delectable and leisurely Uruguayan dining, El Chiringo provides its guests with an unparalleled experience. With its striking views and luxurious vibe, it is clear why this place is one of Uruguay’s top boho-chic restaurants. Guests can also explore the rich local surroundings and enjoy the area’s extensive coastline. This restaurant is one not to miss.
