India is a breathtakingly beautiful country with so much to offer the intrepid traveller. From the vast jungles in the north to the magnificent Himalayan mountains, the sun-drenched beaches to the sprawling plains, there is something for everyone.

Plus, with a huge range of fascinating landmarks and historical sites to explore, you certainly won’t be short of things to do and see. Here, we explore four of the top travel destinations in India that entice visitors from across the world.

  1. Chennai

Chennai sits on the Bay of Bengal on the eastern coast and is a hugely popular choice among travellers. As the fourth largest capital city in India, it’s brimming with culture and history – offering a huge number of things to do and see.

Head to the famous Fort St. George to see many historical artefacts, visit the iconic Kapaleeshwarar temple or take a stroll on Marina beach.

  1. Hampi

Nestled in the state of Karnataka, Hampi is a historical village best known for its stunning vistas and ancient temples. Visiting the UNESCO World Heritage monuments is an absolute must, which include the Narasimha, Krishna, Ganesa and Pattabhirama temples, among others. You can also head up Matanga Hill at dawn to enjoy panoramic views of Hampi as the sun rises. It’s a tricky hike but well worth the effort.

Other noteworthy attractions include the Qutub Shahi tombs, the Birla Mandir temple and the Salar Jung Museum – showcasing an amazing collection of art and antiques.

  1. Goa

Sitting on the western coast, Goa is famous for its unspoilt beaches and spice plantations. If you’re keen to enjoy some sun, sea and sand on your trip to India, then Goa is a must-visit. Palolem, Baga and Benaulim beaches are favourites thanks to their calm waters and golden sand.

You could also head to Dudhsagar Falls, a magnificent 300-metre-high waterfall in the Western Ghat mountain range , as well as the Basilica of Bom Jesus – an iconic UNESCO-listed church built in the 1600s.

If you’re keen to explore but don’t want the hassle of creating an itinerary, then an India tour may be the best way to travel. It means you get to see the highlights with an expert guide, who will offer knowledge of the area you’d struggle to find elsewhere.
