When you think of wine tourism, you probably conjure up images in your mind of rolling French vineyards or sun-kissed California grapes, the mountainous landscapes of Marlborough or the beautiful hilltop towns of Tuscany. Wineries and urban centers, like New York, Berlin, or London, probably don’t feature highly.
But you might be surprised to know that London, the buzzy, vibrant capital of the United Kingdom, boasts a number of exceptional wineries, leading the rejuvenation of British wine and adding a unique urban edge to wine tourism.
So if you are a wine aficionado and planning a romantic honeymoon cruise to Europe, don’t be tempted to stick to the traditional wine regions like Burgundy, Rioja, or Champagne. Instead, check out these three must-visit wineries in London for a unique wine experience.
London Cru was the original Central London winery, spearheading the urban viticulture revolution when it opened in 2013. It was the brainchild of the owner Cliff Roberson, aiming to capitalize on the explosion of craft breweries and urban distilleries that was occurring in London at the time. London Cru concentrates on English grapes from vineyards in Sussex and has created a number of exceptional vintages like their Petticoat Lane Pinot Gris PetNat and Pimlico Road Pinot Noir.
Despite its urban location, Blackbook is quite a traditional winery. It’s founder, Sergio Verrillo, spent time working at vineyards in Burgundy, New Zealand, Stellenbosch, and California, and is well-versed in the classic ways of wine. All Blackbook’s grapes are sourced from growers in Essex, Surrey, Kent, and Oxford, and Sergio’s method’s are intervention-light. Despite his traditional background, he’s not afraid to experiment, and alongside a regular range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay come alternative vintages made with indigenous yeasts, zero sulphur, and unusual blends aged in concrete.
Renegade is by far the most hipster and alternative winery in London, tucked away in an abandoned railway arch surrounded by graffiti, second-hand shops, and all the hustle and bustle of London’s exciting East End. Renegade produces 12 wines, with the most exclusive being a classic fizzy Blanc de Noirs (only 800 bottles ever made!) and the most popular a naturally sparkling Bacchus.
Given the success of artisan gin and craft brewing, it was only a matter of time before wine jumped on the urban bandwagon. London is an exciting city to visit at the best of times, and now is a real destination for wine lovers as well.
